Cryptocurrency is a form of digital currency which make use of technologies involving cryptography to control the creation of the additional units, securing its transaction, and verifying the assets transfer process. When compared with traditional currency system which the control is centralized to banking system, cryptocurrencies decentralized its control through distributed ledger technology, typically a blockchain, that serves as a public financial transaction database. Bitcoin was first released as open-source software in 2009, and it is generally considered as the first decentralized cryptocurrency. There are more than 4,000 types of alternative coin have been created since then.
 
In this seminar, speaker will give an elementary briefing on the concept of cryptocurrency and blockchain, including its history and some technologies involved, such as Digital Signature, Blockchain and Distributed Ledger, as well as how these technologies was applied. Speaker will also discuss whether the cryptocurrency could replace traditional currency system.
